La Maison de la Chimie, one of the oldest conference centres in France, is located at a privileged site in the heart of Paris near Boulevard Saint Germain, just around the corner from Hotel Bourgogne & Montana. This exceptional geographical position, near the National Assembly and the main government ministries, also provides a prestigious work environment: a private mansion dating from 1708, expanded with two wings built in the early 1930s.

 

LA MAISON DE LA CHIMIE FOUNDATION

La Maison de la Chimie Foundation was born of an idea put forward in France before World War I to build a "Maison de la Chimie" (Chemists’ Guildhall) to encourage contacts and exchanges among scientific societies and between these societies and industry.

It wasn’t until 1926, while preparing for the celebrations of the centennial of Marcellin Berthelot’s birth (1827-1907), that the proposal was enthusiastically revived with an international dimension.

In 1928, management of the project was entrusted to the Foundation, which was created for this purpose as a public interest organisation. It took several years to ensure financing, choose the site and complete the construction work. La Maison de la Chimie was inaugurated in 1934, and its fiftieth anniversary was celebrated in style on 16 November 1984.

In keeping with its Articles of Association, the Foundation is responsible for maintaining and managing La Maison de la Chimie. It also organises activities for chemists from around the world, encouraging them to use 28 rue Saint-Dominique as a place to meet and share ideas and experiences.
