The best known include the inescapable Moulin Rouge, located in Pigalle near Montmartre and the Terrass Hotel.

On 6 October 1889, at the foot of the Butte Montmartre, the ambiance was festive: the opening of a new Music Hall in the Jardin de Paris did not go unnoticed – the Moulin Rouge was born. Next to Place Blanche, the public came in droves to discover this extravagant hotspot: a huge dance floor, mirrors everywhere, a gallery where it was chic to mix with the riffraff, a garden with an enormous elephant and donkey rides to amuse the ladies. A wild atmosphere where the show was both on the stage and in the room: aristocrats and rough types mixed together in joyful complicity, crews from the posh neighbourhoods and the little people of Paris had fun together in total euphoria.
The masters of the premises were Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler. They called their establishment “Le Premier Palais des Femmes” (The First Palace of Women) and bet on their success, proclaiming to anyone who would listen that the Moulin Rouge would become the most grandiose temple of music and dance in the world. From the opening day, their dreams came true. The other Music Halls had better watch out!!!
