Palais du Luxembourg is located in the 6^th arrondissement of Paris, near the Madison, Buci and Artus hotels. It comprises a palace that is home to the French Senate and the Musée du Luxembourg and is surrounded by gardens.

 

 

Acquired by Marie de Médicis between 1614 and 1631, the Luxembourg Garden underwent many changes until Haussmann’s renovation of the city, which gave it its current layout.

While strolling through the Luxembourg Garden, you can enjoy its fruit garden, greenhouses and orchid collection and learn more about garden preservation.
Certain alleyways are planted with remarkable trees, veritable witnesses to the history of the Garden. The Luxembourg apiary school continues the uncommon apiary tradition in the centre Paris.

Take a look at the architectural wealth of the Garden: the Orangerie and its autumn exhibition, the statues that can be found throughout the park and leisure and play areas for the pleasure of thousands of visitors every day.

Around 1630, Marie de Médicis had the Luxembourg Grotto built, imitating the nymphaea and fountains that decorated Italian gardens. It has since been called the "Médicis Fountain". Thomas Francine, “Intendant Général des Eaux et Fontaines”, is said to have drawn the plans.

 

The Museum’s programme alternates between two major themes:

The Renaissance, in honour of Marie de Médicis, to whom we owe the Palais du Luxembourg, and modern art, to evoke the Museum’s golden age between 1887 and 1937.

The “Masterpieces of the Rau Collection” exhibit inaugurated a successful series of exhibits which include: “Raphael, Grace and Beauty”, “Modigliani, The Melancholy Angel”, “Pont Aven and Gauguin”, “Botticelli – From Lorenzo the Magnificent to Savonarola”, “Moi! Self-Portraits of the 20^th Century”, “Veronese the Profane”, “Matisse, a Second Life”, "The Phillips Collection in Paris", “Lyric Flight”, “Titian, in the Face of Power”, “René Lalique, Jewels of Exception”, “Arcimboldo” and recently “Vlaminck”.
