- Parisian Theatres
With nearly 140 theatres and concert halls, Paris will dazzle your eyes: major productions, historical reconstitutions, musicals, pleasure and relaxation are yours for the taking. For high culture, the finest theatrical productions can be found in Paris: classical or contemporary plays, Greek tragedies revisited, vaudeville and boulevard theatre, one-man shows, opera, dance or poetry, the choice is wide-ranging and the programmes are rich. European and international co-productions are regularly presented in the original language with French subtitles.
With up to 300 shows a week, the theatre is commonplace in Paris. Indeed, the “Avignonisation” of the capital introduces its residents to the show culture, encouraging the young and old alike to discover new theatre companies.
Furthermore, we should point out the “Right Bank-Left Bank” spirit that still reigns over Parisian theatre, in keeping with the theatres’ geography: traditionally, the so-called "boulevard" theatres (mainly located on the Grands Boulevards) are dedicated to "bourgeois comedy", as opposed to “artsy theatre” of the Left Bank.
You can attend shows that are frequently given at café-theatres such as the Théâtre La Scène 7 (18th arrondissement) or Café de la Gare (4th arrondissement) which are open to young talents and major comedians alike, whose their often wild humour, sharp sense of lampooning and satire are sure to make for a fun evening. It should be pointed out that the café-theatres are survivors on the Parisian scene. The city is in fact in a period of one-man shows and popular theatre, which have been growing strongly, notably in the many theatres that have cropped up on the East Side of the capital. All genres can be found at the growing number of "little theatres" (15 to 100 seats), with a preference for comics.
A third circuit has thus been growing in Paris, light-years away from the major private theatres and public stages such as the Comédie Française, where plays by the illustrious Molière are regularly presented.
Moreover, some theatres also offer all types of shows for youngsters with concerts, folk tales or presentations of the fabulous adventures of Guignol, the favourite puppet of French children and adults alike.
In the heart of the St Germain quarter and its theatres (Theatre de l’Odéon, Theatre de la Huchette, Le Point Virgule, etc.) the Madison Hotel, Hotel de Buci and the Artus Hotel will welcome you with Parisian charm to their rooms whose design was recently revisited.
Near the Comédie des Champs-Elysées, Theatre Marigny and Place de la Concorde, the Bourgogne & Montana will offer you its finest hotel services in the most luxurious of atmospheres.
